Ambitions | Born in Norfolk, Virginia in January of 1990, not much is known about Nicholas McCabe’s family nor are there any known relatives on file at the time of this report. Based on records obtained from the Virginia Department of Social Services, Nicholas spent time in and out of various foster and group homes for most of his life until the age of 17, when he graduated from TC Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia in 2007 and enlisted in the United States Navy. Graduating Recruit Training and Technical Training as an Intelligence Specialist in early 2008 , then was assigned to Naval Support Activity Bahrain in January of 2008 as a Petty Officer Third Class and was deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq two months later as an augmentee with the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines until March of 2009. During this time, Navy records indicate that he engaged in multiple combat engagements and earned the Navy Combat Action Ribbon with two stars, Iraq Campaign Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star. Following this deployment, he was promoted to the rank of Intelligence Specialist Second Class. Returning to Bahrain in 2009, he was reassigned to the Naval Support Activity in Darwin Australia where he assisted in the United Nations Integrated Mission in East Timor (UNMIT) until 2010 and then worked as an embedded Maritime Intelligence Specialist aboard HMAS Launceston HMAS Armidale in order to deter piracy and drug trafficking on the Australian continent. Following the end of this tour, he was awarded the Australian Conspicuous Service Cross for his services to the Australian government and reassigned as an Enlisted Support Instructor at the University of California NROTC, which allowed him to make progress towards a dual Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Business, which he successfully completed in early 2014. At the end of his shore tour, he applied and was recommended for Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, which he completed in early March of that year. Now Ensign McCabe then proceeded to complete the Naval Aviation- Rotary pipeline in approximately 24 months and elected to specialize in the MH-60 Seahawk Helicopter. As a newly promoted Lieutenant, Junior Grade He was then assigned as a junior pilot in Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron FOUR until 2017, when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and redeployed, this time to Afghanistan. During this deployment, he experienced a crash following a Special Operations Insertion due to an unexplained power loss where he landed in the middle of the Arabian Sea and nearly drowned before being rescued by a backup helicopter. Due to this near death experience, Nicholas began to experience powerful psychological disturbances that seemed to defy imagination- images of his dead comrades telling him details that only they knew or images of free floating apparitions that seemed to resemble historical figures. This resulted in a medical suspension of his flight privileges pending a psychological evaluation. He was then reassigned as a Rotary Wing Plans Officer at MCAS Cherry Point and transferred to the US Navy Reserve. |
